Watch Kenny and Warren G ‘Regulate’ on ‘Kimmel’

Two of the music world’s realest Gs joined forces on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Monday night: Warren and Kenny G took the stage for a funk-drenched, yet smooth, performance of the latter’s 1994 classic “Regulate.”

Kenny G dutifully recreated the song’s slinking synth line on his trusty soprano saxophone, but also provided melodic assistance as the late, great Nate Dogg‘s original vocals played over the loudspeaker. While he stayed on top of the hook at first, it wasn’t long before Kenny G was making outlandish runs on his sax as a tasteful compliment to Warren G’s too-cool delivery.

While the duo were able to find the perfect stylistic middle ground, it comes as little surprise considering the original “Regulate” relies heavily on a sample of Michael McDonald’s adult contemporary classic “I Keep Forgettin’ (Every Time You’re Near).” “It was a record that I always loved, from being a kid and my parents playing it when they had their company of friends over,” Warren G told Rolling Stone about the McDonald track. “I had the sample and was, like, ‘It would be so different to do a hip-hop song over this.'”

Warren G is also set to hit the road next month for a weeklong tour dubbed “The G-Funk Experience.” The trek kicks off March 7th at the Harbour Event Centre in Vancouver before heading through Washington, Oregon and California.

Kenny and Warren G’s performance of “Regulator” also brought Kimmel‘s monthlong “Mash Up Mondays” series to a close. Weezer and ZZ Top kicked off the festivities, as “Wee-Z Top,” followed by Morris Day and the Time and Haim playing as “Morris Day and the Haim” and Aloe Blacc and New Jack Swing heroes Blackstreet teaming up as as “Aloe Blaccstreet.”
